Changes for Donald Street
The old Aladdin Bowling Lanes site will soon be renewed
The 'Centre Franco-Ontarien de Ressources Pédagogiques' intends to renovate the existing building and add a three-story office building attached to the front of the existing structure. The office building will also contain a small bookstore which will offer materials produced by the Centre. The proposed use requires no zoning changes.
The owners do require site-plan approval before proceeding. I asked the proponents and staff to attend a public meeting (June 6) at which residents could learn about the project and the proposed site-plan and provide their comments. Some residents indicated that they were opposed to this project. Other residents felt threatened by the proximity of the Centre to an elementary school with a day-care. There is considerable irony to this last issue as it is the purpose of the Centre to generate teaching/educational materials for francophone school boards throughout the Province. The Centre's clientele includes Anglophone school boards with immersion programs in Ontario and elsewhere in the country. Buried in that irony is the fact that delivery vans (~ 9 per day) will service the site.
I am working to make certain that the site plan will incorporate several safety features - e.g. a service access at the rear of the building thus separating the delivery vans and small trucks from the Centre's clientele and from the school, a greater separation between the Centre's Donald street entrance and the school, an on-site sidewalk and a bicycle rack, fewer parking spaces and more greenery facing Donald street. Also, windows facing the properties on Brant should be designed to respect the privacy of the neighbours. I believe that the proposed Centre can be community friendly if the proposed changes are approved and assuming a measure of good will on the part of all concerned.
The PXOs will soon be history
The Pedestrian Crossing (PXO) at Quill Street will be replaced with full (3-way) traffic controls signals. The PXO near Telford will be replaced by a pedestrian actuated traffic signal.
These measures are partly the result of a ten-year old (!) policy to eliminate PXOs throughout the City due to safety concerns.
