NEWS FROM CITY HALL

Wood & Juliana – 2005
Complete road, water and sewer rehabilitation is necessary on these two roads. Tendering is expected to occur this fall. The works themselves will occur next year, budget 2005 permitting. A consultation was held on the evening of June 16th in the Community Hall. The major issue ‘turned’ around the circles proposed by staff at the end of the 3 cul-de-sacs. These 8-metre radii circles were the minimum required to allow for snow clearing equipment to complete a turn-around in a one-pass manner (without backing up). After much discussion, staff and the consultants (J.L. Richards) agreed to see if sufficient adjustments could be made to the positions (& geometry!) of the circles to satisfy the adjacent residents.

Collateral Issues
1. Pedestrian Path: ‘Upper’ and ‘lower’ Wood are connected by a pedestrian stairway currently in need of repair. There was agreement on this and on the desirability of having this pathway maintained all year. I will work with City staff to see if the necessary repairs can be incorporated in the contract. As well, I will attempt to see if the resources can be found to have this pedestrian connection maintained in the winter months, something that the Village had never managed to do.

2. Naming: The fact that Wood is interrupted by the need for this pedestrian link causes some confusion AND delay for taxis, delivery vehicles but most significantly for emergency vehicles. The possibility of re-naming one of the segments of Wood Avenue was explored. Most appeared to accept the notion that perhaps it was timely to consider correcting this long-standing anomaly. A report is coming to City Council in the fall dealing with other such situations elsewhere in Ottawa. If a consensus could be reached in time it would save the fee
(~ $1400.00) that would normally be required to process a name-change application.

I wish one and all a relaxing and agreeable summer.
