MAY 2004
NEWS FROM CITY HALL
City Engineering Works – 2004
1. Acacia (Maple – Beechwood)
Complete road and sewer rehabilitation is necessary. A sidewalk
will be added on the west side and the intersection at Rideau
Terrace will be reconfigured to a regular ‘T’-form. Duration: June
to late November. Final finishing layers of asphalt will follow in
the spring of 2005.
2. Birch Avenue & Its Lighting
Rehabilitation works on this street will resume as soon as ground
conditions permit. All that remains to be done are the curbs, the
sidewalk, two finishing layers of asphalt, AND, of course, the
street lights.
The design initially proposed by City staff was not in harmony
with the existing coach-style fixtures already in place in the
area and pleased no one. A third consultative meeting was held on
January 12th 2004 to allow residents the opportunity to provide
additional input on the fixtures and on the colour of the lighting
while respecting the budget allocated for the project. After much
iteration, the option finally accepted by staff had Coach Style
fixtures with 150-watt High Pressure Sodium bulbs mounted on
25-foot poles (20’ above ground) at 49 meters spacing. The
proposal is a clear improvement over the existing light levels and
respects the character of the neighbourhood. Thanks are due to
Jane Dobell, president of the RPRA as well as Neil Bliss, Iola
Price and Anthony Keith who worked tirelessly on this file. It is
my sincere hope that everyone will find the result acceptable in
every respect.
3. Birch North
This work, from north of Birch to the Ottawa River, will occur off
road and will connect the new storm sewer to the River. Duration:
July to October.
4. Princess Avenue
This work may be postponed one year as the NCC is now involved!
Stay tuned.
