Support for a Decent Library Acquisitions Budget

An article in last Thursday's Ottawa Sun left the impression that Councillors on the Ottawa Public Library Board were not supportive of reversing the cuts to the acquisitions budget imposed by the Transition Board. This is far from the case. During the Board's review of the draft budget, I flagged the cut to the acquisitions budget as something that I found unacceptable. A library is about books. The Transition Board had said that their budget recommendations would not involve service reductions. How then is one to view a cut to the library's ability to purchase books if not as a cut in service? Once that debate was launched, it was obvious that the entire Library Board, including all of the Councillors present, was supportive of establishing an adequate acquisitions budget. The debate then focused on the correct level of that budget item.

The entire budget discussion, during a very long evening's work, certainly left me the impression that all Board members, including the Councillors, were strongly supportive of creating a first rate library system for residents of Ottawa. I thank you for this opportunity to correct the record.
