Advisory Committees

Council will shortly create new citizen-based advisory committees. The committees being proposed are an amalgam of those that had previously existed in the various municipalities. Residents of New Edinburgh have a long history of participation in community affairs. You will appreciate the excellent opportunity which such committees present to influence your local government. Also, the new City would benefit from some portion of the extensive human capital resident in the Burgh. I am appealing to your sense of volunteerism to consider participating in one or the other of the following committees:

  • Environment

  • Youth

  • Equity & Diversity

  • Accessibility

  • French Language Services

  • Mobility Issues

  • Poverty Issues

  • Arts

  • Seniors

  • Parks & Recreation

As well, there will be a number of quasi-judicial committees established. For the urban area the relevant committees are a Committee of Adjustment, a LACAC and a Property Standards Appeal Committee.

More on Road Safety in New Edinburgh

I have received a report entitled "Update - Traffic Calming in New Edinburgh" dated February 2001. This report, prepared by members of NECA's traffic calming committee, updates a 1997 community directed study which was approved by City Council. Very few of the 25 recommendations in that earlier report were implemented. The Update document recognizes new developments and circumstances, for example, the NCC's Canada and the World Pavilion, proposed changes at Rideau Hall and the sale of the former city hall on Green Island. The Update is an excellent opportunity to refocus attention on traffic concerns in New Edinburgh and seek a commitment by City staff on an implementation schedule. In addition, I have received a petition requesting a stop sign at the free-flow right-turn lane at the Lisgar/Rideau Terrace/Dufferin intersection. Although I do not believe that a stop sign would have altered the tragic events of January 27, 2001, the request has also been forwarded to staff for review within the context of the larger traffic study. I expect that the intersection may need to be modified if pedestrian safety is to be enhanced but I will await the result of the examination requested of staff.
