MANOR PARK CHRONICLE

JANUARY 2003

Public Works in Manor Park on St. Laurent Boulevard – Almost Finished

Manor Park residents will be pleased to learn that the disruption, which these works have caused, is largely over. You will recall that the underground infrastructure, the water mains and sewer lines in the area, were in a poor state and required rebuilding. At one stage of these works, it became necessary to reroute bus service from the edge of the community into its usually quieter core.

As promised, bus service was restored to its normal circuit as soon as was practical. As it turned out, it was not necessary to maintain the rerouting as long as initially indicated and on November 22nd buses returned to their usual circuit. During this period, the drivers were asked to take extra care when driving through the detour area. I believe, that, in large measure, this in fact occurred. As well, the extra traffic, which followed the bus detour, was largely rerouted around the community. Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding during this time of disruption.

Finally, the works themselves on St. Laurent Boulevard were completed in a timely manner. All that remains are the finishing works, including a final asphalt layer, landscaping at the boulevard edge of the roadway and remedial works at the individual private driveway entrances. This work will occur next spring.

Merci!

Beechwood

You may recall that the Ward Council for Rideau-Rockcliffe undertook an examination of the Beechwood corridor as a result of concerns by many residents that this area was showing signs of stress. In the past year a survey of businesses on the street was conducted (January) and open houses were held on the 28th of September and the 5th & 8th of October. A report entitled “Beechwood Avenue Revitalization Project – November 2002” was recently submitted to the Ward Council. Thanks to all who participated in the exercise by taking the time to share their thoughts on the matter. Kudos to Lana Burpee for the survey and to Jane Thompson & Andrew Wisniowski for organizing the open houses and for producing an excellent report. Those interested may find the report posted on the Rideau-Rockcliffe web site. Hard copies may also be consulted at the St. Laurent and the Rockcliffe branches of the Ottawa public library.

Season's Greetings

I take this opportunity, on behalf of my family and myself, to extend to all Best Wishes for Peace, Health and Prosperity in 2003.
