WARD COUNCIL LAUNCHED IN RIDEAU-ROCKCLIFFE
OTTAWA -- The Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward Council held its inaugural meeting on October 29, 2001 at the St-Laurent Complex. This initiative is intended to create a venue for lively exploration of municipal issues and options with the councillor. The Ward Council's membership is reflective of the ward geographically and socio-demographically. Volunteer members represent community associations, recreational and cultural organizations as well as businesses, social services, seniors and youth in the Ward. The Ward Council will meet regularly (starting monthly) but will also utilize technology to extend its discussions. Email and Chat Rooms are expected to play an integral part in facilitating discussion.
Councillor Jacques Legendre convened the Ward Council to provide for better dialogue and better representation to the residents of his ward. "It is my hope that the Ward Council, as an advisory body to the councillor, will be an interesting opportunity for its members to engage in frank discussions of municipal matters affecting either the Ward or the City as a whole. Over the long term, I expect that I may be a better representative for Rideau-Rockcliffe and a wiser Councillor when making choices in the public's interest as a result of the Ward Council."
As its first challenge, the Ward Council plans to tackle the issue of revitalizing the business strip along Beechwood Avenue. The Ward Council will look for successful models elsewhere and seek expert advice before bringing the issue to a Community Forum early in the New Year. "This project is an example of how the Ward Council can bring forward issues and develop 'made-in-the-community' solutions", explains Lana Burpee, Executive Director of the Ward Council.
