The St. Laurent Complex is Chosen as One of the Secondary Service Centres for the New Ottawa

Regional Councillor Jacques Legendre applauds the choice of the St. Laurent Complex, the jewel of the City of Ottawa's network of community centres, as a secondary service centre for the new city. This choice was made known during today's presentation as part of the Transition Board's "Mega-Week" series of proposals concerning the structure of the new Ottawa.

This centre is already actively serving the population through its recreation, health and cultural facilities, the largest summer camp program in the City of Ottawa and community meeting rooms.

In future, citizens will also have access to a wide range city services. The focus of these secondary centres will be to facilitate completion of the most common and routine transactions, primarily for the residential user. These centres may provide:

  • general by-law, program and service information,

  • accept payments for items such as property taxes and parking tickets,

  • issue basic permits such as dog licences,

  • and various municipal forms and applications.

The network of secondary service centres is one component of a multi-facetted strategy for delivering services in the new City. The strategy also includes:

  • a one-stop client service centre located at the new City Hall (Lisgar Street),

  • satellite service centres in the East, South and West,

  • E-service delivery through kiosks, interactive voice recognition systems, web-based transactions, etc..

The public are invited to make their views known about these proposals during a series of community meetings on August 1, 2 and 3. Call 580-4750 to register in advance. Councillor Legendre encourages the community to support this proposal by communicating with the Transition Board, either in person or in writing, but definitely before August 8, when the decision will be finalized.
